TYLER, TEXAS — The City of Tyler’s maintenance “in-sourcing” program for government agency vehicles was featured in the September 2004 issue of Utility Fleet Management, reported the Tyler Morning Telegraph. The Vehicle Equipment Services Department has been in-sourcing maintenance from the Tyler Independent School District’s police department for about one year. The city took over maintenance of six police vehicles after Fleet Manager George Baker analyzed the costs involved and submitted a proposal, according to the Morning Telegraph. The newspaper also reported that city documents stated that by in-sourcing the vehicles, the city could save the school district 50 percent of its maintenance costs while still making a profit. In addition to the financial savings, the school district also gets faster service from the city with this agreement.
