AUGUSTA, MAINE — Tire Warehouse, located throughout New England, has seen a rise in city fleets using nitrogen to fill their tires. Tire Warehouse locations have offered free nitrogen dispensing to all law enforcement agencies and ambulance services since last October, according to the Kennebec Journal. The Ingersoll-Rand Co., which makes nitrogen inflation systems, said the benefits of using nitrogen include a more stable, consistent tire pressure; cooler running tires; improved fuel economy; longer tread life; less oxidation of tire components; and reduced rim and wheel corrosion. State fleets utilizing nitrogen filled tires include the Waterville Police Department and Augusta Fire Department. Department managers say they’ve seen reduced fuel consumption since filling the tires with nitrogen.
