Several Louisiana gubernatorial candidates have made state fleet reduction a focal point of their campaign platforms, according to The Advocate.
In his first campaign commercial, U.S. Sen. David Vitter said he planned to eliminate thousands of unnecessary state cars to save Louisiana several hundred million dollars. Other candidates then chimed in that they would also reduce the number of state owned vehicles if elected.
Louisiana owns 10,543 vehicles, according to the Division of Administration. The fleet's vehicle count has been steadily dropping for several years.
In 2014, Louisiana spent $68 million for fuel maintenance and insurance. To lower that cost, the Division of Administration plans to outfit each state vehicle with GPS devices that will monitor how the vehicles are used. The telematics plan will cost $10 million and save the state $30 million in fuel, maintenance, and insurance costs.
