As wildfires continue to burn in Southern California, the Los Angeles County Fire Department is adding two Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk helicopters to its fleet, the Santa Clarita Signal reported.
The two helicopters will join the department’s fleet of three S-70A Black Hawk helicopters and a few other helicopters in fighting fires, providing emergency medical transportation, and assisting with search and rescue operations.
LAFD’s new Black Hawks will be upfitted with a 1,000-gallon water tank, extended landing gear, a medically equipped interior, and a single pilot cockpit.
Although fires in Los Angeles county have been mostly contained, wildfires continue to burn surrounding areas. The Thomas Fire, which began Dec. 4, has burned over 272,000 acres in nearby Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties and is currently at 60% containment, according to Cal Fire.
Government fleet sales rose from both January and February monthly totals, which were both under 20,000.
