HILLSBORO, MO - The Jefferson County (Mo.) Council approved a Five-Year Capital and Strategic Plan 2011-2016 in early August, a plan that prioritizes three capital construction projects, including the construction of a new fleet facility.

Fleet currently shares a garage complex with Parks & Recreation. Planned for 2014, the new facility would replace an old building constructed in 1950, with Fleet's portion measuring 3,570 square feet, and constructed in a style known as "Quonset hut," a steel building with an arched metal roof, according to the plan. The Parks portion of the building was built in 1965, but has "passed its functional lifetime," the plan stated.

The plan further states that if the building were rehabilitated, it would still be inadequate for fleet. It contains only 2,000 square feet of workspace, five under-sized bays, and no secure parking area for County vehicles. The plan states that Fleet maintains 250 vehicles.

The new facility is estimated to cost $2.96 million. This would include four double-length bays (50x15 feet) and one wash bay. A detailed breakdown estimates 2,330 man-days required to complete the project. A location for the facility is undetermined.

While the plan has been approved by County Council, funding has not yet been approved. According to Jefferson-High Ridge Patch, the projects will be considered in the County's 2012 budget hearings, which begin this month.
