Ind. City to Bring Maintenance In House

The City of Fort Wayne, Ind., will bring fleet maintenance in house for the first time in 22 years. At a recent meeting, Fort Wayne City Council approved the move, ending a contract with First Vehicle Services, which has handled the city’s fleet maintenance for 18 years.
Fort Wayne’s fleet includes more than 2,340 vehicles, reports the Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly. Bringing maintenance in-house is expected to save the city nearly $350,000 per year.
The city will hire 26 employees to take on maintenance, and all hourly employees, technicians, and parts personnel of First Vehicle were offered positions in the new department. Larry Campbell, CPFP, fleet management director, said the agreement will count years of service with First Vehicle when determining city benefits.
