The State of Illinois has rented a fleet of 10 refrigerated semi-truck trailers to store the bodies of deceased COVID-19 patients in case morgues fill up, Kendall County Now reported. The vehicles are being retrofitted for medical examiners throughout the state in case they are needed.
The state is making 20 trailers available to counties, and 12 have requested them to be prepositioned.
Cook County in Illinois announced on April 9 that it had acquired 14 refrigerated trailers and was in the process of securing six more to support a new surge center opened to expand capability and ease overcrowding at hospital morgues.
Other public agencies have deployed refrigerated trailers for use as mobile morgues, including the State of Tennessee and New York City.
Government fleet sales rose from both January and February monthly totals, which were both under 20,000.
