BOISE, IDAHO – Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has signed an executive order aimed at improving the fuel efficiency of Idaho’s fleet of vehicles.

According to BusinessWeek, the new order directs all executive branch departments, agencies, and offices to attempt to decrease gasoline and diesel fuel consumption by using more fuel-efficient vehicles, boosting operating efficiency, and curbing the amount of miles logged annually by employees. State agencies are required to show a clear business need before purchasing any four-wheel-drive vehicles or SUVs.

“The state of Idaho can and should lead by example, managing its state vehicle fleet to improve and protect air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the amount of fossil fuels purchased and used,” the order stated.

The executive order requires that the Division of Purchasing compile a list of vehicles meeting the criteria of the new mandate. Any state purchase made outside of this list must be authorized by the agency director or administrator, BusinessWeek reported.
