GREENWICH, CT – The serious injury of a 19-year-old mechanic has made the Town of Greenwich´s fleet department take a closer look at its safety and training, reported the Advocate newspaper. The part-time employee became trapped under the dump bed of a road-sanding truck when it fell on him during a night shift. He suffered four broken vertebrae and severe bruising to his pelvic area, according to the paper. An internal incident report said the employee had not been approved to work the night shift and did not take the appropriate safety measures before working on the equipment, said Elizabeth Linck, director of the fleet department. Since the accident, the department has provided a retraining class for all employees in the proper use of all equipment. “We wanted to be already compliant before any formal write up was done,” said Linck. The Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency will review the department´s safety regulations. The agency also investigates the town´s workers´ compensation claims. According to the Advocate, the town experienced two serious accidents and numerous other mishaps in October.
