Despite Government vehicle sales seeing an increase into August 2024 — with truck and SUV sales experiencing a significant bump compared to car sales — September reports show sales fell 12.3% in September 2024 compared to September of last year, according to Bobit/Government Fleet sales data released Oct 1.

Vehicle Sales Dip Only Half the Story

Despite government sales dropping to 18,697 vehicles sold in September 2024 (from 21,319 in September of last year), there has been a slight increase of sales YTD. Looking at automakers' reports, there were 211,278 government vehicles sold YTD, which is a 1% increase from the 209,249 reported sold during this same time in 2023 [Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru, and Toyota sales numbers were not present for government fleets during this period].

Looking at monthly totals, both car, truck, and SUVs saw a decline with car sales seeing the biggest decrease going from 1,607 sales in 2023 and only 821 sales in 2024, a 48.9% difference. Truck and SUV sales went from 19,712 sales in 2023 to 17,876 sales in 2024, a 9.3% drop. 

Breaking Down 2024 Year-to-Date Vehicle Sales

With a 1% YTD government vehicle sale increase, how did sales look across the board? YTD, Car sales went from 16,922 last year to only 5,608 this year. This was a drop of 66.9%. 

However, government car sales did increase from last month's numbers going from 692 to 821. 

Truck and SUV sales kept numbers up with an increase of 6.9% moving from 192,327 vehicle sales in the previous year to 205,670 this year. This follows a similar trend of last month's numbers with truck and SUV sales seeing an 8.8% increase over last year, jumping from 172,615 to 187,794.
