Government Fleet Sales Fall in August Despite Year-to-Date Gain

Government fleet sales declined in August, but stronger year-to-date truck and SUV sales kept the overall 2026 total ahead of last year.

Government fleet vehicle sales dropped 5.3%, with 19,243 vehicles sold in August compared to 20,328 vehicles sold in August 2025. (The six major Asian-based automakers did not report any government fleet numbers for June).

As has been common in past months, cars saw the biggest differential with a 65.4% drop from 27 cars sold in August 2026 and 78 sold in 2025. Truck and SUV sales were down just over 5% with a reported sales of 19,216 this year, compared to 20,250 sold last year.

Year-to-Date, cars continued to have the largest gap at 73.6%, a decrease of 614 vehicles sold from last year's 834 cars sold.

However, truck and SUV sales have pushed last month's number past those of 2025 with a 3.8% jump. This past month there were 164,545 trucks and SUVs sold compared to the 158,517 sold so far this time last year.

Total government vehicles sales are up 3.4% with 164,765 vehicles sold so far compared to the 159,351 vehicles sold last year during this reporting season.
