A study of the City of Augusta, Ga., fleet management operations shows that city departments inconsistently followed service intervals, according to the Augusta Chronicle.

During an investigation of the city's outsourced vehicle maintenance with First Vehicle, the former city auditor found that fleet vehicles were not brought in for oil changes and preventive maintenance according to schedule, resulting in an estimated $100,000 in additional repairs each year. The study also noted that fleet vehicles are duplicated and underutilized across various departments.

In January, city commissioners voted to renew a one-year maintenance contract with First Vehicle while officials research whether it would be more beneficial to take fleet maintenance in-house. In an effort to cut costs, Augusta's Central Services Division identified underutilized vehicles to be removed from the service contract.
