Former Sheriff’s Car Bought at Auction Contained Bomb

LOS ANGELES -- A Thousand Oaks, Calif., man who bought a former Kern County sheriff's squad car at auction got a shock when he opened the trunk and found a bomb. Shawn Weiss was examining the Ford Crown Victoria at a self-service car wash when he noticed a wire connected to an orange plastic tube with the words, "Highly Explosive When Detonated," according to the Associated Press. He called the police, who brought in the bomb squad. A robot removed the device and it was detonated. Investigators are trying to determine the source of the pipe bomb. The police said it was unclear whether someone forgot to remove the explosive device before auction or if it was placed there after the fact.
