Sales of vehicles from five manufacturers to government agencies declined 7.8% to 23,405 in August with a modest decline in truck sales and sharp slide in passenger car sales, according to Automotive Fleet data.
Government agencies purchased 20.6% fewer cars (4,472) than a year ago and 4.8% fewer trucks, SUVs, and vans (18,933).
Year-to-date sales remain strong, as the manufacturers have seen a 28.8% increase to 157,111 vehicles for the first eight months of 2016 compared the the same period a year ago. Truck-based sales have increased 32% to 124,106, while car sales have increased 12.9% to 33,005 units.
Government fleet sales rose from both January and February monthly totals, which were both under 20,000.
