The State of Florida’s Senate Transportation Committee chair has filed legislation to centralize fleet management for the state’s 25,000 vehicles, Saint Peters Blog reported.
The bill calls for the Department of Management Services to prepare a plan for the creation and administration of a centralized fleet by November 2016 to be submitted to elected officials. The plan must address cost-effectiveness of vehicles, managing a motor pool fleet, developing a replacement plan, vehicle procurement and maintenance, monitoring and enforcing regulations, maintaining records, managing remarketing, implementing a fuel management program, studying the cost-effectiveness of leasing and alternative fuels, and equipping vehicles with GPS units.
The plan must also include a comparison of costs versus contracting out fleet management and maintenance. The bill was filed on Sept. 21.
A December 2013 report by Mercury Associates criticized the state’s fleet management, the news source reported.
