The City of Gainesville, Fla., has completed construction of its centralized fleet maintenance facility that's expected to provide efficiencies for the fleet, said Bill Malcolm, CPFP, general services director
The new facility, completed Oct. 25 after 13 months of construction, consolidates two separate maintenance facilities. The total cost of the project doesn't exceed $10.7 million, Malcolm said.
The maintenance building, which is 44,000 square feet and has 30 bays, sits on a fleet campus of approximately 19 acres. There are eight structural (full side-to-side) bays or 16 service bays for light-duty vehicle repairs and seven structural (full side-to-side) bays or 14 service bays for heavy-duty vehicle repairs. The facility will service approximately 1,500 units.
The building has several sustainable elements, including a highly reflective roof for reduced cooling costs, use of low VOC materials, lighting systems with energy-saving automated controls, and natural daylight in regularly occupied spaces.
There were also sustainable construction practices, including sustainably harvested wood, regional construction materials, construction materials from recycled content, and recycling of construction waste from the project.
