DES MOINES, IA – Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack proposed an executive order requiring state agencies to reduce energy consumption and boost their use of renewable energy and alternative fuels, according to the Sioux City Journal. Under the order, state agencies will be required to reduce energy use by 15 percent by 2010, and the state has already spent $51 million on energy efficiency. Secondly, agencies will be required to get 10 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources, such as wind generation. Finally, state vehicles, except for law enforcement, will be required to use alternative fuels or be hybrids. Agencies will have to submit quarterly reports on their progress. Iowa turns out 975 million gallons of ethanol each year and is the nation's leading producer. Iowa is also the nation's third-largest producer of wind energy. Almost all Iowa gas stations offer a gasoline blend of 10 percent ethanol and a few dozen more offer E-85.
