The Dodge Charger Pursuit with all-wheel drive is now available for ordering, Chrysler's top government fleet official announced Friday.
The AWD Charger Pursuit joins a suddenly crowded field of all-wheel patrol vehicles that provide officers greater stability when pursuing scofflaws. The vehicle joins AWD version of Ford's Police Interceptor sedan and P.I. Utility. GM has also introduced an AWD version of its Tahoe PPV.
Chrysler brought its AWD Charger Pursuit to police vehicle testing in Michigan and Southern California in late 2013.
The Charger Pursuit's AWD operates as a front-axle disconnect system with an active transfer case. The vehicle runs in rear-wheel drive, and transitions to AWD when needed. The transition is made using triggers for environment and weather, speed, state of the stability control system, road surface, and driving style.
The AWD system can detect wheel slip and divide power between the front and rear wheels to maximize traction, according to Brad Davis, Chrysler's head of government sales and operations.
