The District of Columbia is running a pilot program with a local taxi company in an effort to cut costs and reduce the city fleet. According to WAMU 88.5, employees will be able to hail a taxi on the district's dime, which is expected to reduce fuel use, eliminate parking fees, and allow the district to cut vehicles from its fleet.

Currently, D.C.’s Department of Public Works maintains nearly 900 passenger cars for 78 agencies. According to WAMU, employees using fleet vehicles must often circle blocks looking for parking, leading to rising costs. The district spends $2.6 million in parking costs and more than $2 million for maintenance and fuel every year. Seven hundred employees from 15 D.C. agencies and 100 cab drivers are participating in the pilot.
