COLUMBIA, SC — Two years after the Department of Health and Environmental Control began using ethanol 85, it is now available to the public in Columbia, S.C., reported WIS News 10. According to the report, Fleet Manager Jan Smoak said the department has its own pump for its fleet of vehicles. He added that the engines are more efficient, but the vehicles get about 5 percent fewer miles per gallon. Mike McMenamin, owner of the Gervais Street gas station, said he decided to offer the cleaner burning fuel made from corn because it is made in the U.S. and helps the national economy. The fuel is comprised of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline and costs slightly more than regular unleaded. While most new cars can use E-85, many older models are not designed to burn ethanol.
