CLEARWATER, FL - Clearwater Gas System celebrated the opening of the first public natural gas filling station in the Tampa Bay area on Oct. 7, according to the Utility.
The station, which cost $1.9 million, was partially funded with $450,000 in federal stimulus money, according to Brian Langille of Clearwater Gas. It has four dispensers, each of which have two fueling hoses.
City leaders and stakeholders celebrated the opening of the CNG station on Oct. 7.
The new filling station is currently being used by a natural gas garbage truck purchased by the City's Solid Waste/General Services department. The plan is to have 70 natural gas garbage trucks in service, saving approximately $18,000 per truck, per year in fuel costs. Ten are expected to arrive by January, Langille said. When economically beneficial, the City will convert light duty vehicles to use natural gas.
Clearwater Gas System purchased one Honda Civic GX sedan and plans to convert light-duty trucks to run on CNG.
The station will be open to the public by December, he stated.
Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard spoke at the ceremony.
