DECATUR, IL – The city of Decatur, Ill., received the first of the new black and white Chevrolet Impala police cruisers that will replace the present white cars, according to the Herald-Review. The current fleet will be phased out over the next several years. Former City Manager Jim Bacon decided to modernize the fleet and do away with the black-and-white patrol cars that had been a city tradition since the 1920s, according to Police Chief Mark Barthelemy. In conjunction with the city's 150th anniversary observance, the city decided to return to the traditional color scheme. Nine of the new cars are scheduled to be purchased this year for about $18,000 each. Another 10 cars will be purchased next year and so on until the 27-car patrol fleet is updated, the chief said.
