FALL RIVER, MA – Mayor Edward M. Lambert Jr. has asked the Fall River City Council to approve a $1.6 million loan order to pay for a new meter-reading technology, according to the Herald News. The new technology will allow water meter readings to take place from a specially equipped vehicle.

If the city council approves the loan order, water meters on all homes and businesses would be changed, according to Director of Municipal Services James Smith. The meters would transmit a signal to a vehicle fitted with a special receiver. The technology will save Fall River more than $2 million over the next 20 years, stated Smith.

The new system will allow meter readings to take place much more frequently while saving taxpayers money. The project is scheduled for completion by late spring or early summer.
