PORTSMOUTH, VA - The City of Portsmouth, Va., City Council agreed on August 24 to begin replacing an aging fleet of fire trucks, police cars, and other city vehicles after a two-year pause to save money, according to The Virginian-Pilot.
Council members voted to appropriate $4 million from the city garage fund balance for purchases. The fire department, police, waste management, sherriff, and stormwater are some departments in need of new vehicles, according to a city manager's report.
The city's administration decided about two years ago to slow the purchase of vehicles to reduce debt and lease payments and stay within the city's financial policy limits, the report says. It is now in a position to begin borrowing money for more purchases, according to the newspaper.
