Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and city officials have launched the Chicago Works jobs and infrastructure plan, kicking off the first of the five-year multi-billion-dollar plan. It includes funding for brides and viaducts, streets and alley resurfacing, sidewalk repair, improvements to bike lanes, and fleet upgrades.

Over the next two years, the city has allocated $162.1 million in funding for fleet, equipment, and IT systems, according to a city release.

Fleet investments include public safety vehicles and streets and sanitation specialized equipment, as the Assets, Information and Services Department (AIS) works toward its goal of attaining a smaller fleet with newer vehicles ultimately requiring less spares and vehicle maintenance. Newer equipment also provides greater fuel economy, higher reliability, and modern safety features.

“Additional investments in fleet and equipment will not only drive down our operations and maintenance costs, but improve the efficiency and productivity of our workforce ensuring residents get services faster," said AIS Commissioner David Reynolds in the release.
