CHATTANOOGA, TN - The city of Chattanooga has started to use biodiesel for its fleet of 400 vehicles. City Fleet Manager Brian Kiesche stated that the city will use a blend of 5 percent biodiesel and 95 percent petroleum diesel. The city plans to use a 20 percent biodiesel blend soon, as reported in the Chattanooga Times Free Press. The transit system in Knoxville started using biodiesel in its fleet in the summer of 2004, according to Mark Hairr, executive director. The transit system is paying 23 cents per gallon more for the 20 percent biodiesel blend than petroleum diesel, but Hairr says the system has a federal grant to make up for the higher cost. The Denver Public School District is going to use biodiesel fuel made by a Fort Collins company in 50 of its 450 school buses. The school district is using the fuel as part of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "Clean School Bus" initiative to reduce diesel pollution.
