John Manring, fleet chief for San Diego County, Calif., will be retiring this summer. His last day is August 2.

Manring began his career in the automotive industry in 1975, beginning in an automotive machine shop and working his way up to a management role. In 2010, he moved to the public sector by becoming San Diego County’s fleet coordinator, and he was named chief of departmental operations — fleet in 2017.

At the county, Manring is responsible for administering the vehicle and equipment program for 32 county departments and overseeing a fleet budget of $82 million and a staff of 62 employees.

The fleet has been named among the Leading Fleets and 100 Best Fleets for many years. It also achieved the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence in 2012. Manring’s other accomplishments include being named a finalist for this year’s Public Sector Fleet Manager of the Year award and contributing to the development of an Electric Vehicle (EV) roadmap that will lead the county to EV conversion through 2030.

The county is currently looking to hire Manring’s replacement. The job listing is available on the county website.
