The City of Modesto, Calif., is expanding a bus maintenance facility so it can handle the city's entire vehicle fleet in a consolidation expected to save the city $500,000 a year.
Modesto is moving maintenance operations of its 835 buses, police cars, sedans, and heavy equipment from three locations to have all fleet work done at 1609 Eighth St., where the city opened a $17.8 million bus-maintenance facility in July 2012.
The city plans to more than double to capacity of the facility by adding eight maintenance bays to existing seven at a cost of $5.5 million. The City Council has approved the hiring of a design firm. Construction could begin in late summer of 2015 and take about a year, reports the Modesto Bee.
