The City of Carlsbad, Calif., has hired a new Public Works superintendent to oversee the fleet. Bradley Northup, CAFM, was previously fleet coordinator for San Diego County and began his new role on Jan. 27.

Northup is responsible for fleet programs and operations. Carlsbad’s fleet team consists of one supervisor and seven technicians, managing and maintaining nearly 500 vehicles ranging from fire equipment to police vehicles and specialized vehicles. The fleet is valued at just over $30 million, and the division operates on an annual budget of approximately $3 million.

Northup has more than 15 years of experience in the automotive industry, including as a technician. During his time at the county, he worked on implementing its Green Fleet Action Plan and the county’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Roadmap, which led to the installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and the conversion of fleet vehicles to EVs. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Regional Clean Cities Coalition as well as the Board of Directors for the Pacific Southwest Chapter of the National Fleet Association (NAFA) and is an active committee member of the Law Enforcement group of the National Fleet Association (NAFA).

Over the next year, Northup will be working to develop a fleet master plan to support the development and implementation of a $2 million fleet facility remodel project. He will also supervise the implementation of GPS onto most of the fleet and lead procurement efforts for approximately 60 vehicles, with a budget of $4.1 million.
