The Utica (N.Y.) Police Department unveiled its Armadillo surveillance truck with $24,000 worth of new upgrades.
New features include six fixed-mount digital cameras, two pan-turn-zoom digital cameras, 360-degree video coverage, the ability to store and recover video footage for up to 65 days, extended battery life that allows the Armadillo to record continuously for seven days, and the ability to live stream video footage to the Mohawk Valley Crime Analysis Center through an app on command staff’s smartphones.
The Armadillo is a Brinks truck that was repurposed for police use in 2010. It was taken out of service for about a year as these upgrades were installed, reported the Utica Observer-Dispatch. Many of the vehicle’s previous cameras were either obsolete or did not work.
