YONKERS, NY - The city is making good progress in reducing its fleet of take-home vehicles, said City Council President Richard Martinelli, according to The Journal News newspaper. In September, Martinelli introduced two proposed resolutions that would enforce a long-ignored provision of the city code and would end the practice of providing luxury vehicles to certain city officials. A law passed in 1994 limits the number of take-home vehicles to 28. The city has argued that the 1994 law governing city vehicles is unenforceable because the council cannot limit the power of the mayor, the paper reported. A state Supreme Court justice ruled in the administration´s favor in a similar case in 2003. So far, the city has reduced its fleet to 145 take-home vehicles, a decrease from 231in February.
