Va. City Launches Motor Pool
The City of Norfolk, Va., has launched a motor pool to reduce fuel consumption and create a "culture of sharing" within the city. The city plans to eliminate older, underutilized vehicles and turn over the remaining vehicles to its new motor pool.

The City of Norfolk, Va., has launched a motor pool to reduce fuel consumption and create a "culture of sharing" within the city. The city plans to eliminate older, underutilized vehicles and turn over the remaining vehicles to its new motor pool.
City of Norfolk Fleet Maintenance Manager Facundo Tassara said eliminating the older vehicles has allowed the city to purchase six new alternative-fuel vehicles for the motor pool.
“By creating a motor pool at City Hall and requiring departments to share, I have been able to recommend eliminating five of 12 vehicles and reassigning the rest to departments that need vehicles,” Tassara said in a statement. “These vehicles will help us greatly reduce fuel consumption and costs."
Currently, the motor pool includes a 2017 Toyota Prius, 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid, 2017 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, 2017 Ford Transit Connect Cargo, and two 2017 Nissan Leafs. In the future, the city plans to expand to at least two additional motor pool locations.
