Snohomish County Sheriff Adds Off-Road Motorcycle to Fleet
EVERETT, WA – Snohomish County Sheriff plans to spend about $18,000 for a 2007 KTM 990 Adventure with an after-market police package.
EVERETT, WA – Snohomish County Sheriff plans to spend about $18,000 for a 2007 KTM 990 Adventure with an after-market police package, according to the Seattle Times newspaper. The bike itself is about $13,000. The bike is equipped for off-road use and primarily will be used to stop fast and reckless driving through Snohomish County road projects.
Sheriff’s deputies said they can’t use the standard BMW R1200 RTP motorcycles in work zones because they’re not built for “off-road” use.
Deputies will use the bike to patrol in road-improvement zones such as paving projects where often many county employees work close to oncoming traffic. The purchase will be made by the county’s public-works department, but the vehicle will be transferred to the sheriff’s department for use.
The sheriff’s department is hoping to purchase more off-road vehicles in the future. It recently applied for a $200,000 state grant that would allow it to purchase two all-terrain vehicles — most likely motorcycles, according to the Seattle Times newspaper. The Sheriff’s Office continues to purchase other motorcycles as well. It has six BMWs in use now and is purchasing six more, as well as the KTM.
