SAN DIEGO — San Diego police traffic officers have started training with new BMW motorcycles that will replace the department’s aging Kawasaki fleet, as Kawasaki no longer makes the police model, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The 55 new cycles were purchased with $1 million in fees collected from vehicle-impound fines accessed to unlicensed drivers. The cycles cost about $20,000 each and come fully equipped for police use. Improvements include a more sophisticated braking system, two batteries instead of one, a bigger gas tank, more visible emergency lights, and tighter suspension. Cycles were also tested from Honda and Harley-Davidson, but the BMW 1150 RT-P was chosen, despite a slightly higher price tag, for its safety features and reliability.
