Salt Lake County Approves New Vehicle Idling Policy
SALT LAKE CITY - Salt Lake County predicts it can save six figures on its budget by implementing a new vehicle idling policy.
SALT LAKE CITY - Salt Lake County predicts it can save six figures on its budget by implementing a new vehicle idling policy, according to www.ksl.com.
The Salt Lake County Council just passed the policy unanimously after seeing the numbers. The Deseret News reports the policy requires drivers of county-owned vehicles to turn off the engines if idling for more than one minute consecutively or more than five cumulative minutes in an hour.
The fleet management office said cutting back on idling 15 minutes a day will save the county $100,000 in a year. If idling is cut back 30 minutes a day, the county could save $200,000. Those 15- and 30-minute totals may be conservative, since county vehicles idle an average of seven hours per week.
The fleet management director clarifies that the $400 monitoring devices that could be installed are optional.
