SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The mayor of Salt Lake City criticized Salt Lake County officials for driving sport/utility vehicles (SUVs) despite high gas prices, according to KSL TV. Mayor Rocky Anderson says the taxpayers are funding the fuel for vehicles with a low fuel economy. Salt Lake County executives, including the county mayor, have been driving SUVs that are part of their county fleet. One official was averaging 4.6 miles a gallon. Another executive recently quit after it was revealed he used a county SUV to tow a boat to Lake Powell. County officials say their fleet has won national awards and they use SUVs because they have better resale value. Nevertheless, Salt Lake County Mayor Nancy Workman says she and other elected and appointed officials using county cars will turn in their SUVs by June 15. Salt Lake City's mayor, who drives his own lower-emission alternative-fuel vehicle, called the county's policies appalling, according to KSL TV. Salt Lake's two largest governments have had different responses to the city’s pollution problem, according to KSL TV. Salt Lake City has led a clean-car crusade, getting rid of dozens of SUVs, making officials drive their own cars, investing in alternative-fuel vehicles, even switching meter readers to pint-sized mini-cars.
