ULSTER COUNTY, NY – The budgets of local police departments in Ulster County are becoming thin trying to keep Impalas, Crown Victorias, and SUVs filled with gasoline, according to Times Herald-Record. With high-performance add-ons, the minimal mileage of police vehicles drops to very low levels. Police departments still feel the pinch when the cost of gas soars above the approved budgets, even though fuel for government vehicles is bought tax-free in bulk. Ulster County Legislator Glenn Noonan said the county looked into buying hybrid cars, but passed due to the high prices and cost of replacement parts. The county's purchase policy has been to buy fleets of the same model for ease of service and maintenance. The models have been mostly Ford SUVs and sedans for the sheriff's office and social services departments.
