TROY, MI – A car camera mounted to the seat about the driver’s right shoulder has been introduced to the law enforcement market as an alternative to windshield-mounted cameras, according to the Detroit News newspaper. CruiseCam International Inc.’s founder, majority stockholder, and CEO, Scott Watkins, developed the design to reduce windshield vibrations and provide better video quality. In addition, the CruiseCam eliminates the hazard created by a windshield-mounted camera that breaks loose during an accident. Roughly 30 percent of the 400,000 patrol cars in the United States are equipped with cameras, and usage is expected to grow in response to growing litigation against police officers, reported the Detroit News. CruiseCam VHS systems retail for $2,700, while the digital systems cost $4,900. Currently, about 200 police departments are using 1,000 systems. The company has developed additional products for the motor sport industry and the general public. Last year the U.S. Postal Service bought 6,250 rear-mounted cameras.
