Westmoreland County, Pa., could begin selling off as many as two-thirds of its fleet of vehicles in favor of a leasing contract to reduce spiraling maintenance costs.

County commissioners floated a plan on Dec. 16 to enter a five-year leasing contract with Enterprise Fleet Management to lease cars, trucks, and other vehicles used by roads and parks workers, detectives, park police, sheriff's deputies, and other workers, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune. The county would pay $145,000 per year to lease the vehicles.

"We're spending an awful lot on vehicles and maintenance," said Commissioner Charles Anderson. "This way we're constantly getting refreshed vehicles."

The county could lease as many as 25 vehicles per year, and then sell off the vehicles it owns. About 105 vehicles in the 164-vehicle fleet would be eligible.
