New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his administration will invest $1.3 million for the installation of bullet-resistant door panels, window inserts, and other retrofits for all New York Police Department (NYPD) command vehicles used by uniformed personnel. This project will be funded by a combination of city tax levy funds and asset forfeiture funds.

In late 2014, the city invested $6.8 million to outfit 3,813 patrol cars with bullet-resistant door panels. 2,100 vehicles have been outfitted to date and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2017. The city later added $10.4 million to install bullet-resistant window inserts. The first 500 installations are expected to be completed this month.

The latest investment will expand the ballistic protection program to include the agency’s 72 command vehicles. This announcement was made after NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia was shot and killed through the window of a command vehicle.

The front windshields of the command vehicles will not be outfitted with ballistic protection, as current technology does not accommodate the curvature of the windshields.
