MONTGOMERY, AL – A year and a half ago the Montgomery County Commission deconstructed the typical five-day work-week schedule and overlayed it with a new, four-day work-week, 10-hour a day routine, according to www.wsfa.com.
The change was a move to save money on fuel, and back then the price of gas was about 60 cents a gallon cheaper than it is today.
It cost more than $100 to fill up a smooth drum roller at the construction site, one machine out of an entire fleet of heavy-duty trucks and tractors in the engineering department.
Montgomery County has saved more than $50,000 in the last 18 months.
Montgomery County is not alone.
Autauga County has been doing it for the last 10 years but only during summers since there are more daylight hours. The City of Montgomery changed its maintenance department schedule last June, and so far has saved nearly $10,000 in fuel costs.
