John Scharffbillig, the City of Minneapolis’ director of fleet services, retired on April 30. Scharfbillig managed a fleet of 1,800 units consisting of police vehicles, fire trucks, plow and maintenance vehicles, construction equipment, boats and trailers, and light-duty vehicles. The fleet team consists of 90 employees who work out of four maintenance facilities.

Scharfbillig started his career as a maintenance worker for the State of Minnesota 40 years ago, before transitioning to research for snow and ice control. He was later named the state’s Department of Transportation fleet manager. Upon retirement in 2008, he joined the City of Minneapolis fleet. Accomplishments at the city include putting in place a green fleet policy, being recognized as among the 100 Best Fleets, and becoming a Platinum NAFA Sustainable Fleet.

In his retirement, Scharffbillig plans to stay active with the NAFA Fleet Management Association as well as the American Public Works Association. He plans to teach training classes.

“I am looking forward to retirement, and having time to balance some personal and family time, as well as continuing to grow professionally,” he said.

The job posting for the fleet director position has closed, and the city hopes to announce Scharffbillig’s replacement shortly.
