Honolulu's Alternative Fuels Fleet No. 2 Among Cities

HONOLULU, HAWAII – Fifty-one percent of Honolulu's fleet of city vehicles uses alternative fuels, giving Honolulu the second-highest ranking of U.S. cities with alternative-fuel programs.

HONOLULU, HAWAII – Fifty-one percent of Honolulu’s fleet of city vehicles uses alternative fuels, giving Honolulu the second-highest ranking of U.S. cities with alternative-fuel programs, according to the first survey of its kind by SustainLane Government, which calls itself an online sustainability knowledge base for state and local government, as reported by the Honolulu Advertiser. Las Vegas, which has nearly 63 percent of its vehicles using alternative fuels, took the top ranking.

San Francisco-based SustainLane sent surveys to the 50 largest American cities asking them to report their number of electric and gas-hybrid vehicles and the percentage of vehicles using alternative fuels, which include biodiesel, hydrogen, ethanol, compressed, and natural gas. After Las Vegas and Honolulu, the top 10 cities and percentage of vehicles using alternative fuels are:

3. Kansas City, Mo. — 45 percent
4. Albuquerque — 42 percent
5. Dallas — 39 percent
6. Denver — 31 percent
7. Phoenix — 28 percent
8. Los Angeles — 25 percent
9. Seattle — 25 percent
10. Portland — 25 percent
