JACKSON, MS — The addition of eight new fire trucks is expected to help put fires out quicker and lower insurance rates, firefighters told WLBT TV in Jackson, Miss. The city purchased seven automatic transmission pumpers and one new rescue unit. The existing vehicles, with manual transmissions and double clutches, were often difficult to maneuver on hills, said firefighters. The new fire trucks include a compressed air foam system that is capable of putting out fires three times faster than plain water. In addition, heavy rubber hoses have been replaced with light-weight lines and the vehicles contain greater storage space. Although the top fire rating in Mississippi is a one, Jackson is the highest in the state with a three, reported WLBT TV. With the new vehicles, the department said it expects to earn a rating of two. The additions to the fleet cost $2.2 million and the department is considering the addition of two more trucks in the next two years, according to WLBT TV.
