DES MOINES, IOWA –- Only about half of Iowa State Patrol cars should still be on the roads, according to WHOTV in Des Moines. According to department guidelines State Patrol vehicles are supposed to be replaced once they hit 80,000 miles. But budget cuts mean nearly half of the vehicles have at least 100,000 miles. Jim Saunders of the Iowa Department of Public Safety said to WHOTV that the vehicles are reliable and every effort is being made to keep the cars in good condition. The department hopes to buy more than 100 new vehicles for next year, according to WHOTV. But because troopers average more than 30,000 miles per year, the department needs to buy twice that many just to catch up.
