FORT SMITH, AR – The Fort Smith Board of Directors have been asked to dramatically reduce a perk that allows city employees to drive home 88 city-owned vehicles.
Acting City Administrator Ray Gosack’s recommendation is that only employees who likely are to be called out at least four times a month for after-hours work should receive vehicles to drive home, according to www.nwanews.com.
If approved, the change would go into effect Jan. 1, giving city employees four months to find other transportation. It is expected to reduce the number of take-home vehicles to about 12.
Their use as take-home vehicles last year caused 352, 467 extra miles to be driven and consumed 22, 147 gallons of fuel purchased by the city, according to city estimates. Employees drive to cities more than 20 miles away, including Sallisaw, Okla. (23 miles), Bokoshe, Okla. (30 miles), and Paris (41 miles).
The fuel savings alone would be near $65, 900 next year, the city estimates.
