A former state attorney for La Salle County, Ill., spent county funds on an SUV and filled up using the county’s fuel pump for personal and professional use, The Times reported.
Two years into his four-year term, Brian Towne traded in his county vehicle for a newer model using drug forfeiture funds. Previous state attorneys used their own cars or vehicles forfeited to the office under asset forfeiture laws.
On his last day in office, Towne sent out a memo, claiming the county board chairman agreed that Towne’s position was a 24/7, 365-days-a-year position, and thus the vehicle could be used for daily activities.
