John Deere is expanding its compact equipment lineup with the new 40 P-Tier Compact Excavator, a machine weighing under 10,000 pounds and designed for utility, landscaping, and general construction work.

John Deere says the excavator's operating weight is intended to make transportation between jobsites easier without requiring a commercial driver's license.

Configuring the Excavator for Different Jobs

The 40 P-Tier can be configured with several optional components, including a hydraulic pin-grabber coupler, rearview camera, factory-installed thumb, angle blade, and auxiliary hydraulic packages.

John Deere is also introducing the ME28 Mulching Head for the 40 P-Tier. The attachment is designed for applications including right-of-way maintenance, fence-line clearing, and work in confined areas. It uses a variable-speed motor, reversible knife-style teeth, and a rotor designed to process material.

Attachment Manager technology comes standard and allows operators to save and recall hydraulic settings for compatible attachments. This can reduce setup time when moving between different attachments and tasks.

Giving Fleet Managers Equipment Data

The 40 P-Tier comes standard with JDLink connectivity, providing fleet managers with machine location and health information through the John Deere Operations Center.

For public works fleets managing equipment across multiple crews or job sites, the system can provide information for monitoring equipment utilization, location, and maintenance needs.

Inside the cab, the excavator includes John Deere's CommandARM and an 8-inch touchscreen display. An electronic pattern changer is standard, while a rearview camera and Bluetooth radio are optional.

Daily service points are positioned for easier access, and available cab configurations include heating and air conditioning, upgraded seating, and additional storage.

John Deere plans to unveil the new model at Equip Exposition, Oct. 20-23, 2026.
