Federal fleet managers plan to add more compressed natural gas (CNG) pickups, implement car-sharing, and establish a short-term rental program to increase fleet utilization in 2015, a GSA fleet director has announced.
William Toth, Jr., the director of the GSA's Office of Motor Vehicle Management, outlined the 2015 fleet initiatives in an April 20 blog post on GSA.gov.
During the 2015 vehicle replacement cycle, the GSA added 62 bi-fuel CNG pickup trucks for five federal agencies, including the Army, NASA, Marine Corps, Navy, and Veterans Administration. The initiative will aid the federal fleet's goal of "decreasing our dependence on foreign fuel sources," Toth wrote.
The GSA also plans to introduce commercial car-sharing under a pilot program to improve the management of motor pools among federal agencies. Federal agencies could reserve vehicles by hour from selected commercial providers.
As another initiative to improve utilization of federal vehicles, the GSA is implementing a short term rental program for vehicles and equipment that would also reduce redundant procurement. Federal agencies could remove vehicles and equipment from their owned or leased fleets and instead rent vehicles needed on a short-term or one-time basis.

Bobit Business Media surveyed 190 fleet professionals and found that while most fleets are tracking costs, fragmented systems and data gaps are keeping true TCO visibility out of reach. With rising pressure to control spend in an increasingly volatile environment, the gap between what fleets think they know and what the data actually shows is wider than you might expect. See how your peers are managing costs today and where the industry still has room to improve.
