HURRICANE, UT — Some residents are concerned about how their tax money is being spent in Hurricane, Utah. Officials spend close to $20,000 a year on city vehicles at a local car wash, according to the Associated Press. City leaders told the AP they want to enhance the value of their vehicles and promote a positive image of the town’s fleet. Between $1,176 and $2,058 is spent each month cleaning and detailing the 50-vehicle fleet, The Spectrum of St. George reported. Mr. Sudz Car Wash is owned by Todd Langston and Hurricane Police Chief Lynn Excell. City Manager Clark Fawcett told the AP Excell regularly discloses on city ethics forms that he is an owner of the car wash and never sought the business from other city employees. Other cities allow employees to wash public vehicles in a city-owned wash bay or in a city yard using a pressure washer and shop vacuum. To curb expenses in Hurricane, supervisors have been directed to only wash vehicles when necessary, rather than at regular intervals.
